Last week, a horse was severely injured and later euthanized after a chuckwagon race at the Calgary Stampede. Animals have lost their lives almost every year of the Stampede, and these incidents are drawing attention internationally because they illuminate a system of entertainment that is unjust and unsustainable.

Unfortunately, the tragedies in Calgary are not isolated incidents. The sheer volume of nonhuman animals being killed each day for their flesh is difficult to fathom, and safely hidden from mainstream discourse. As one activist states, “there is no room for mourning these lives, they are written off as precarious, ungrievable. I think organizing an event like this opens up space and allows a community to come together to contemplate and feel.”

For this reason, a candlelight vigil has been organized by Calgary Animal Rights Effort and VegFest Calgary, two collectives of local individuals working to underscore the growing interest in rejecting nonhumans for entertainment. While most VegFest events aim to be fun and upbeat, organizers also feel that there is much work to be done to challenge dominant patterns of thinking about how animals are used and treated in our society. This vigil is meant to honour not only the victim of the Chuckwagon accident, but to highlight the enormity of suffering that occurs through the entertainment, cosmetics testing, fur, and food industries. Regardless of whether we are vegan or not, organizers emphasize that we should all reflect upon and critically examine the process that exploits nonhumans to serve the need for humans to be entertained.

The candlelight vigil will take place on Saturday, July 15, 2017, at Victoria Park Stampede Station from 9:00-10:30.
